and last but not least

OK, here's the last of the photos I wanted to post. These were all taken with Josh's camera, by the way.

Yay beach. I have the feeling we'll be getting a lot of saltwater goodness this summer. Mmm. I really do think I swallowed half the atlantic, by the way.

did I mention that good canadian blubber?

Bikini courtesy H&M (as is Josh's shoulder bag, at the lower left of the picture; my knapsack, of course, is MEC). Yes, this is probably the most embarrassing picture of me in existence, which makes posting it to my blog kind of deflationary. Yay!

me walking out of the atlantic

Friday was my first ever time swimming in an ocean. Josh and I went down to Rockaway beach, at the end of the A line (near JFK). It was too cold for Josh, but I loved it (yay Canadian layer of blubber). More oceans for me!

a little less feisty

...but still in Trouble; this is after she pulled the phone cord out of my laptop, causing me to lose my internet connection in the middle of an email.

Trouble gnawing my hand

This is my crazy cat, who is of course now wandering over to bother me as I type. She's got sharp teeth, eh?

Quick note

This week I'm really trying to get the research for my dissertation proposal on track -- wish me luck! My mom got safe home, and says hi to everyone (not that she knows I have a blog).

In other news, it's probably worth mentioning that Josh and I agreed that we do, indeed, seem to be dating (and not, just, say, spending lots of quality time together). So that's interesting. Well, wish me luck on that too (and Josh too).

Oh, Bogie and Bacall, we miss you so

So, Tom and Katie are engaged. Well, that's probably no surprise to anyone, even if I still kinda think they're both crazy; Tom's kinda out there and Katie's just really, really annoying (plus she stole my birthday).

But I noticed this in the aforelinked CP article:
The former star of television's Dawson's Creek grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

Now, this sounds a little creepy. But it reminds me of Lauren Bacall (then Betty Perske) at age 18, going with her girl friend to see Casablanca. The two had an argument about Bogie's good looks - her friend swooned for Bogie, but Betty couldn't see that he was all that great. Two years later, Bogie and Bacall were married.

Weird thinking of knowing someone qua heartthrob, then meeting them in person, then loving them for real.

Just a couple quick things

My mom's in town, so I haven't had much internet access; we've been hangin' out and it's been lovely.

1. The park was lovely on Sunday. Absolutely idyllic. We had deli sandwiches, potato salad, and wine.

2. New York has been hot as all hell. Today was a bit better (my mom and I went to the zoo) but the last few evenings have been murderously hot. Hotter than my two small fans can deal with.

3. I'm really happy.

A new link on my sidebar

I just want to draw your attention to a brand new blog, called Women Philosophers, aimed at increasing the visibility of women philosophers.

This is all a result of the fact that a recent list of "Famous Living Philosophers you should know" compiled by Ted Honderich and blogged by Brian Leiter contained very few women philosophers, despite the ease with which the folks on the Society for Women in Philosophy email list could come up with piles and piles more.

It was interesting that there were so few women among the folks that Honderich and Leiter thought were obvious to mention; there are more & more of us all the time, and (importantly, I think) not just working in feminist philosophy, but all over the place.

OK, that's all for now.

Hope everyone else had a great weekend!

Well, the date was lousy, but that's OK -- I didn't really expect it to be good. It was just dull, and I wanted to leave & was trying to figure out the most polite way to do so. It's a little annoying, since before my date showed up I was having fun chatting up the cute bartenders. Alas!

Anyway, an interesting new development has occurred that ought to save me from some more lousy dates, at least for now. Hm. A crush has been requited. Huzzah!

Doug's brilliant words to me re. this new development with my friend Josh: "It's good that he's not celibate." Truer words were never spoken.

OK, so I feel bad spilling any details on this blog beyond that, so I won't, but just thought it was worth mentioning. OK.

Arctic Anglicans vote to condemn same-sex marriages

And not only that, they voted unanimously.

This part was particularly sad:
The Arctic Diocese made clear at the meeting that only people with beliefs similar to the Montreal Declaration can work at their churches.

Delegates passed a separate motion, outlining conditions of employment. The church says it will not employ anyone having sex outside marriage or who are in homosexual relationships.

The church will also refuse to employ anyone who "promotes and supports" that sexual behaviour. The rule applies to clergy as well as other positions such as receptionists.

Ben Arreak, the church's bishop for Nunavik, said their stance will keep out non-conservative views and practices.
